Moving on up…?

Yesterday, Dave, my boss, told me that HR finally, officially opened up the part-time librarian’s position that has been vacant for almost two months.  Since I have been playing the role essentially since the day I started working at the library, I went ahead, followed the required procedure and applied for the post.

Silly, isn’t it?

I’ve already been doing the job for almost two years as a Librarian Assistant II, all the patrons know me, like me and accept me in the role, so the powers-that-be are going to waste a lot of time and money doing a bunch of interviews just so they can say they did it.  Sometimes the public sector is so bizarre it makes my brain hurt.  If we were in the private sector, they would just promote me, give me the raise and move on.  Put governmental rules and regulations into the mix and everything just bogs down and becomes a painful slog through the mud.

In any case, this will do for the short-term.  I will continue to work part-time while I finish school, and then we’ll see where we are and what the future looks like.  Obviously, a part-time low-pay job is not going to cut the mustard.  Hopefully, the economic outlook will be better by the time I graduate in December and something new, exciting and FULL-TIME will come along!  Until then….
